(Q)  Atheist and Agnostics: My true story concerning God.

First, I have a definition of what an Atheist is, and what an Agnostic is.

What Is an Atheist?

An atheist is anyone who doesn’t believe in any gods. This is a very simple concept, but it’s also widely misunderstood. For that reason, there are a variety of ways to state it.

Atheism is the lack of belief in gods; the absence of belief in gods; disbelief in gods; or not believing in gods.

The most precise definition may be that an atheist is anyone who does not affirm the proposition “at least one god exists.” This is not a proposition made by atheists. Being an atheist requires nothing active or even conscious on the part of the atheist. All that is required is not “affirming” a proposition made by others.

What Is an Agnostic?

An agnosticis anyone who doesn’t claim to know whether any gods exist or not. This is also an uncomplicated idea, but it may be as misunderstood as atheism.

One major problem is that atheism and agnosticism both deal with questions regarding the existence of gods. Whereas atheism involves what a person does or does not believe, agnosticism involves what a person does or does not know. Belief and knowledge are related but nevertheless separate issues.

There’s a simple test to tell if one is an agnostic or not. Do you know for sure if any gods exist? If so, then you’re not an agnostic, but a theist (A theist is anybody who believe in some kind of deity). Do you know for sure that gods do not or even cannot exist? If so, then you’re not an agnostic, but an atheist.

Everyone who cannot answer “yes” to one of those questions is a person who may or may not believe in one or more gods. However, since they don’t also claim to know for sure, they are agnostic. The only question then is whether they are an agnostic theist or an agnostic atheist.

30 to 35 years ago I worked for a refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating company in Tiffin, Ohio. I was around 40 years old at the time. We would travel up to 45 miles for service calls. One Friday afternoon I was given two work orders. One was to repair a commercial ice machine in Carey, Ohio which was around 19 miles from Tiffin. The other one was to repair a heating and cooling unit at the Tiffin school of opportunity center. Our usual quitting time for the day was 5 PM. I was given these work orders around 2 PM that Friday afternoon. I went to Carey first.

When I arrived at my destination in Carey, Ohio the owner of the business (a bowling alley) showed me the ice machine that was not working. After looking over the ice machine for a few minutes, I realized it was an electrical problem. So, I went out to my service truck and brought in my volt-ohm meter. With the meter I was able to find and replace the defective part. I placed the meter on top of the ice machine while I waited for the ice machine to make a batch of ice to make sure it was working properly.

After the ice machine made a batch of ice ok, I picked up my tools, put them in the back of my truck and headed back to repair the unit at the Tiffin school of opportunity center. It was after 4 PM until I arrived at the center in Tiffin. I was very anxious to get home that evening and was hoping it would not take too long to repair the heating and cooling unit so I could get off work at 5 PM as usual.

The janitor at the school showed me the unit that broke down. It took awhile to figure out what was going on with this unit. I went back to my truck and picked up my volt-ohm meter again, and found the problem was with one of the electrical contactors not making a good connection. I replaced the contactor and the unit worked fine. The janitor who was with me said good, let’s get out of here and go home. It was after 5 PM so we both were ready to call it a day.

Now, next Monday morning I had to go on another service call in Tiffin which looked like another electrical problem. So, again I went back to my truck to get my volt-ohm meter.

Now, here is where it gets really interesting because I could not find my meter. I called the Tiffin school of opportunity center which was the last place I used the meter. I got in contact with the janitor who was with me on the Friday before the weekend and asked him if I left my volt-ohm meter out there where we worked on that heating and cooling unit. He looked all over and said it was not there, but told me he remembered me putting the meter in the back of my truck because he helped me carry my equipment back to the truck so we could get out of the center that Friday evening as soon as possible, as it was past 5 PM which was his usual quitting time also.

Anyway, I had to go and buy another volt-ohm meter which was an essential tool I needed to do my job.

A week later, after I “LOST” that meter somewhere, the owner of the bowling alley in Carey where I fixed the ice machine on that Friday afternoon was in Tiffin on business and he stopped at the company I worked for and had this volt-ohm meter with him and asked if it belonged to the employee who worked on his ice machine a week or so ago.

About this same time, I returned to my workplace and this fellow ask me if this was my meter. I look very surprised because I knew I used that meter after I left Carey when I was back in Tiffin at the school of opportunity center. I looked at the meter and it was definitely the one I had been using for the last 5 years.

How was this possible? It did not make any sense, until I realized what happened. I am a true Christian believer and was very anxious to get home that Friday evening, and had said a prayer to God to help me get the problem fixed at the Tiffin school of opportunity as soon as possible, so I could get home in time for our family gathering that evening.

If there is no God as most Atheist believe, then please explain how the above TRUE STORY could have happened? This happened to me personally, and there is no way it could have happened by chance or by any other means, except through a divine miracle from the God of all creation. The God that Atheist say cannot exist made this miracle happen because I ask for His help that evening, but I was not aware what happened until a week later when the owner of the bowling alley in Carey, brought back the volt-ohm meter that I left at his place of business.

This really did happen to me personally. It left me with a greater respect for the God I love and worship. Below are a few scriptures that come to mind when I think about that time when God granted me a true miracle.

Jeremiah 32:27:  Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?

Psalm 14:1:  The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Isaiah 44:6-8:  6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. 7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them. 8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

Isaiah 45:5-8:  5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: 6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. 7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. 8 Drop down, ye heavens, from above, andlet the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it.

Romans 14:11-12:  11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

My hope is that some might come to the knowledge of the truth.

II Thessalonians 2:9-12: 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Atheist and Agnostics: you need to look at God’s Word, the Bible, and study it as it say’s in II Timothy 2:15: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Rightly dividing the Word of truth is the one and only way to understand the Bible correctly.
