(Q) What does the Bible say about suicide?
(A) If anyone reading this article is contemplating suicide, please STOP thinking about such things right now, and read the rest of this article! Suicide is never the answer to life’s problems!
Please consider the following verses in Psalm 138:13-14, where it says: 13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
According to the context, verse 13 above does not mean to possess or hold in power, but to fashion or grow together in the mother’s womb. Reins were believed to be the first part of the human fetus to be formed, so here it is referring to laying the foundation of a new being. This seems clear from the fact that it speaks of the formation in the womb (V. 13) and of being fearfully and wonderfully made (V. 14).
God is the creator of all life, and He knows each one of us intimately and desires that each one of us spend eternity in His presence. His heart breaks over the pain we suffer in this life, but He promises us eternal life, free from all of life’s burdens, through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He knows that this life is difficult, so He wants to remove the burdens we carry. We may suffer for a little while, there may be great pain at times, but Jesus will carry us through the hard times. Remember, no matter how bleak a situation may appear, it is only temporary in the scope of eternity with Christ.
I Peter 5:6-8: 6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Satan wants us to believe that we have no hope.
Suicide will not solve any problems in your life, it will only make things worse! Why, because I believe anyone who is thinking about suicide is still in unbelief in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ Jesus. Committing suicide will send you straight to hell for eternity which will be much worse than anything you are experiencing now.
So, what’s the solution?
Place your complete, total trust, faith, and belief in Christ, and Christ alone for the remission of your sins, I Corinthians 15:1-4: 1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.
Ephesians 2:8-9: 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Romans 3:21-28: 21But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
If you have placed your hope and trust in Christ Jesus there is never any reason to take your own life. Jesus loves you so much and as a believer in Him, you will experience that love each day. It is the devil who is spewing the lies that make you doubt and feel hopeless.
Romans 6:23: 23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Timothy 2:5: For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
Through Christ you can go directly to God the Father in heaven. He already knows your problems, but go to Him in prayer, talk to the Father as you would someone at home or on the street, and tell Him your problems. Ask for His intervention in your life, and He will help you according to His perfect will.
Remember, God loves you, and He wants YOU to be with Him for all eternity.
May you find peace in your life through Christ who died for you.
